2023 has seen an influx of AI features from Adobe. The beginning of the year brought the introduction of Adobe Firefly, and since then, its new features have been slowly released as they’re ready.
The latest feature from Adobe Firefly is the Generative Fill tool. This is another great AI feature that will come in handy for many digital artists and creators. Here is everything you need to know about Generative Fill.
Adobe announced its latest AI feature: Generative Fill. The tool is powered by Adobe Firefly, announced in March 2023. It allows you to fill areas in an image with imagery you’ve generated using a text prompt and generative AI technology.
This is the fourth tool to come from Adobe Firefly—which is still in beta mode—adding to the list of its text-to-image generator, vector recoloring tool, and 3D text effects generator.
Adobe’s generative AI lets you create almost anything you can think of, and now with the Generative Fill tool, you can non-destructively add, remove, and replace parts of an image using AI, too.
What Can You Do With Generative Fill?
You can upload your own images to the Generative Fill tool, or you can use any of the provided sample images—on the Firefly browser—to play around and experiment with. Your own images work with as much success as the samples provided.
Using a selection tool, you can select parts of your image you wish to add to, remove, or replace entirely. Once selected, write a prompt in the text box for what to fill your selection with. Whether you want to change what somebody is holding, remove a person from the background, or change the night sky to a peaceful sunset, you can easily do it.
You’ll be presented with multiple results that match your prompt, allowing you to scroll between them to choose the best fit.
With Generative Fill, you can replace backgrounds, add objects, remove blemishes, extend your image with realistic new bounds, and much more. Generative Fill from Adobe Firefly seems almost limitless and has a great success rate for accuracy.
Generative Fill finds its greatest competitor in Canva’s Magic Edit tool, which was released in March 2023.
As with other Adobe Firefly features that have been released, Adobe subscribers can sign up for Firefly Beta and access all the released features through Adobe Firefly’s website. You must be an Adobe subscriber and join the beta to be invited. There might be a waitlist to join.
Unlike most of Firefly’s previously released features, the Generative Fill tool has found itself as an integrated tool on the Photoshop Beta app. This is a different app to Photoshop itself; however, if you’re already an Adobe Creative Cloud user, you’ll also be able to download the Photoshop Beta app from Creative Cloud.
From the Beta app, you can access the Generative Fill tool just as if it is a normal tool in Photoshop. Accessing the tool in Photoshop allows you to create non-destructive results in their own Generative layers.
No matter how you access the tool, you will need to be connected to the internet for the AI generation to work. Despite being able to use Photoshop offline, this may be an issue for anyone accessing the tool if not connected to the internet.
Future Expectations for Integration
Since the beta version of Generative Fill has been implemented into Adobe’s Photoshop Beta app, we can be assured this tool be available in Adobe Photoshop once the full version is released.
While all Firefly features so far have been for static images only, many future Firefly tools are intended for video and animation software. We hope to see the Generative Fill tool be integrated into Adobe Premier Pro to help with framing, removing or changing blemishes, and adding or improving elements in your videos.
This feature could also work in vector software like Adobe Illustrator or animation software like After Effects since some of the generated results are graphics rather than photorealistic. It will be interesting and exciting to see how this tool evolves into features across the Creative Cloud.
